Gilbert returns with a win
With
a probable danger scratched in Whisky, the Philip Feanny -conditioned American-bred Gilbert breezed past challengers returning from a two-month layoff to record his third win on local soil on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
Gilbert’s (
Jack Milton – Casusin A Storm) win was in a native-bred five-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) and imported five-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over 5 furlongs straight.
With Shane Richardson in the irons,
Gilbert was unable to go with the leaders, racing at the back of the five-horse field.
Talona (Raddesh Roman) led ahead of
Shrewsbury Norm (Paul Francis),
Phoenix Risen (Oneil Mullings), and
Traditional Lady (Prince Holder).
When they reached the dummy rails, Richardson asked
Gilbert for an effort, and the chestnut horse began to gain pace, aiming for the leaders.
Gilbert burst on the outside of runners inside the last furlong to win by three-quarter length in a time 1:01.1 (23.0 x 47.2).
Traditional Lady came from behind runners to get second money with
Shrewsbury Norm getting up for third place. It was Feanny’s and Richardson’s first win for the 2024 racing season.
