Veteran Rudolph Austin scores double to lead Portmore over Humble Lion
CLARENDON, Jamaica— The veteran former national captain Rudolph Austin scored a double to lead former champions Portmore United to a 4-1 win over Humble Lion in their Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League game played at Effortville, Clarendon on Wednesday, as their first round schedule ended.
Austin scored one goal in each half as Portmore won their fifth straight game to improve to 27 points. This moved them one point behind leaders and defending champions Mt Pleasant FA, who also had a 4-1 win over Lime Hall Academy in the first St Ann Premier League derby in decades.
Austin opened the scoring in the 17th minute with his second goal of the season before Chevaughn Walsh doubled the advantage in the 20th minute as Portmore United led 2-0 at half time.
Shaquwell Henry made it 3-0 for Portmore United when he scored in the 56th minute before Andrew Vanzie pulled one back for the home team in the 74th minute.
Austin, however, completed his brace two minutes later when he scored in the 76th minute, restoring Portmore United’s three-goal lead.
At Drax Hall, Mt Pleasant FA scored two goals in time added on in the second half as they came from a goal down to beat last placed Lime Hall Academy.
Ronaldo Brown put Lime Hall ahead in the 15th minute but Daniel Green scored in back-to- back games to restore parity for Mt Pleasant in the 19th minute.
Demari Deacon gave them another goal in 27th minute, while Ramone Howell scored Mt Pleasant FA’s third goal two minutes into time added and Oquassa Chong added a fourth in the fourth minute of added time.
Meanwhile, at Wembly, Dunbeholden FC came from a goal down to beat Vere United 2-1. All three goals came in a 13-minute span as Dunbeholden rebounded from a loss to Cavalier SC in their last game.
Kemar Beckford gave Vere United the lead in the 50th minute, but Shakeen Powell equalised in the 55th minute for Dunbeholden FC before Chevoy Watkin’s 63rd minute penalty conversion secured the points.
