Ousted deputy mayor chairs council meeting
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – Ousted on the grounds of non-performance six months ago, former deputy mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy (People’s National Party, Bethel Town Division) was back on familiar ground Thursday when he was asked to chair the monthly meeting of Westmoreland Municipal Corporation (WMC).
He was asked to step in by Mayor Bertel Moore (PNP, Negril Division) who had a meeting with National Housing Trust that the council heard was too important for him to miss.
Councillor Ian Myles (Jamaica Labour Party, Little London Division), who was subsequently voted in to replace Delancy as deputy mayor, arrived late. He voiced no objection to Delancy being in the seat of power. Neither did any of the councillors who were there when Delancy was asked to sit in for Moore. These included some who voted, in July, to have him removed from the position of deputy mayor.
The meeting progressed with no sign of the rancour that plagued it earlier this year. On January 8, Delancy will continue his bid to overturn the decision to unseat him as deputy mayor. The matter is before the court.
It all stemmed from infighting within the Opposition PNP that spilled over into an ongoing power struggle for control of the WMC.
