Parts of Jamaica shaken by magnitude 3.8 earthquake
KINGSTON, Jamaica— A section of Jamaica was rocked by a magnitude 3.8 earthquake Sunday afternoon.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) confirmed the occurrence with a post to X, formerly Twitter, stating that the quake originated 10 kilometres south of Hope Bay in Portland.
“Felt Earthquake at approximately 2:07 pm. Preliminary information from the Earthquake Unit… Magnitude 3.8, located approximately 10km South of Hope Bay in Portland,” the post said.
Social media users reported that they felt the quake as far as Kingston.
“The bed just make one big rock. Elleston flats,” one user said.
“Felt it in Portland and was wondering if I am crazy, because since the last big earthquake I am always randomly feeling phantom earthquakes,” another Instagram user commented.
Others voiced their concerns over the frequency of the tremors as this is the third confirmed earthquake in recent months.
In November the island experienced an estimated 4.2 magnitude quake which was felt across the Kingston Metropolitan Area.

However the Earthquake Unit, in an interview, confirmed that the earthquake felt last month was an aftershock from October’s magnitude 5.6 quake which had caused some infrastructural damage.
