Jamaica Poets Nomadic Tour releases first anthology
The release of Nomadic, a collection of 20 poems, marks a historic accomplishment for the Jamaica Poets Nomadic College and School Tour. The official book launch was scheduled to take place at 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Bookophilia bookstore in St Andrew with a stellar line-up that would include a variety of poetry styles from contributing poets that include the tour’s founder and internationally acclaimed dub poet Malachi Smith, and other award-winning poets such as Dr Opal Palmer Adisa, fabian m thomas, Wise Wurdz, Kwame McPherson, Antonia Valaire, Curtis Myrie, Charlie Bobus and Cherry Natural.
“I am extremely proud of
Nomadic,” said Smith. “To hold this anthology in my hands is a milestone and a dream come true.”
He added, “This all began with me alone visiting schools and sharing my poetry in 2017, and it has evolved into an annual tour with as many as 20 participating poets who selflessly tour the island with me visiting colleges and schools, offering workshops and hosting public events.”
In her introduction to the anthology, Palmer Adisa speaks to the profound impact the tour has on the students and teachers who have the pleasure of participating each year. That impact will now last longer with the publication of Nomadic as schools visited will receive copies for their libraries. The Jamaica Nomadic Poets College and School Tour 2024 began on October 25 and will run through November 10 with a poetry workshop and closing night event, the Last Word, at The University of the West Indies. The tour is sponsored by Maggi and Betting Gaming and Lottery.
