Motorised missiles and WMDS
Dear Editor,
Have you ever been driving and experienced a vehicle heading in your direction, on your side of the road, on a regular one-lane-each-way road at full speed, with no intention of slowing down, pulling over, or stopping, and you have to literally run off the road to avoid collision? Also, have you ever observed vehicles breaking traffic lights with impunity at every opportunity — in front of and behind the police — regardlessly endangering the lives of all other road users.
This happens every day on our roads, and I call them motorised missiles and weapons of mass destruction (WMDS).
These drivers have no fear of law and order, and the police seemingly have no power to prevent them from breaking the law.
I live in Spanish Town, and the main corridors on which this type of behaviour is displayed are the Spanish Town Bypass, Greendale main road, Brunswick Avenue, and Old Harbour Road. This also happens in the other major towns and highways, resulting in death, mayhem, pain, and sorrow.
The main aggressors are, but not limited to, taxi drivers, minibus drivers, and Coaster bus drivers.
Many models and colours of cars feature regularly in this practice, the worse perpetrators being the Probox, AD Wagons, Hiaces, Coasters, Urvans, Voxys, the Wish, Step Wagons, Fits, Swifts, the Isis, Mark Xs, Crowns, and Noahs.
And black cars seem to be the worst! People who drive black cars seem to be demented, although I have no statistical evidence that there is an association with this kind of mentality and the colour black.
The authorities seem helpless to treat with this type of crime on our roads, while they attempt to entrap motorists by using speed traps and monitoring unbroken white lines and stop signs.
It is about time the authorities take steps to reel in this type of behaviour on our roads.
