D-Day for Manning Cup semi-final hopefuls
Today’s Group 1 quarter-final matches in the ISSA Manning Cup are poised to deliver two thrilling clashes as Kingston College (KC), St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), Mona High, and St Catherine High vie for two coveted spots in the semi-finals.
All four teams enter this decisive round with a chance to secure a spot in the final four.
Leading the group with four points, KC will face bottom-placed St Catherine, who currently hold one point, at the Spanish Town Prison in St Catherine. In the other critical match-up at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, second-placed STATHS, with three points, will face off against third-placed Mona, who have two points.
These key matches will no doubt add an extra layer of intensity to the final round.
STATHS, the number one seed in the competition, faced a setback with a 1-0 loss to KC in their previous encounter on Tuesday. Despite the defeat, Phillip Williams, coach of the Bumper Hall-based school, expressed confidence that his team had overcome that setback and was ready to turn the tide against Mona today.
“There were a lot of positives that the players took from that game even though we lost. They are now ready for the next challenge so as to get our season back on track.
“It will be a tough game against a quality, well-coached, and well-motivated team. But these are games that we welcome and have been preparing for, and we are equally talented and motivated. We just want to put on a good show and, more importantly, get the win,” he said.
KC Head Coach Vassell Reynolds acknowledged the challenge presented by St Catherine, describing them as a well-rounded side. He emphasised the importance of a good result in this game and the need for the team to stay focused.
“The approach has always been that the present one [game] is more important than the previous one, and that is the same approach that we are taking into this game on Friday,” said Reynolds.
“We have been doing a lot of preparations for this one because we know that it is going to be a very difficult one for more than one reason. The St Catherine team is a good one, and they have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals as well, and we are not going to take anything for granted,” he continued.
