The right move
Owner of Ireland Records and producer David Ireland says he made the right decision to not sell the masters for the summer hit V6 by dancehall artiste Malie Donn.
In a widely circulated video on social media, Malie Donn said he missed out on the opportunity to sign with a major international label because the owner of the song’s masters decided not to license the song.
“We could’ve been signed to a major label even before V6. But we waiting on a song like V6 before we sign. Unfortunately, the person who own V6, like the masters, they wish not to sell V6 to a label,” Malie Donn stated in the video, which has gone viral.
Malie Donn did not state the name of the owner of the song’s masters in the video. And no reference was made to Ireland Records.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, the Ireland Records boss said, “Ireland Records owns the masters; I am the owner of Ireland Records. It was a good decision not signing it over to the labels. We got a bigger deal to even do a remix with Stefflon Don and that was turned down by the artiste. The song has been doing well on its own, so we didn’t need a major label,” Ireland disclosed.
He further stated, “Major labels don’t know what to do with dancehall music. Look at Talibans (by Byron Messia) and Drift (by Teejay), those were big songs before major labels got involved. We don’t need the major labels. What can they do that we haven’t done?” Ireland reasoned.
Ireland insists that the decision will be justified in the long run and is confident in the effectiveness of his machinery to contonie to push the project.
“I am not going to sign to no label to tell me what to do. Ireland Records has been doing very well out there in the world. I believe that the artiste will thank me later on,” he said.
He also pointed out that several major labels have approached him with offers.
“There were so many offers that we got. All the labels across the world reached out, maybe six to seven, and even their sub-labels, every single day for like two months. You don’t get paid for your work, you get paid for your value,” said Ireland.
Ireland first ventured into music in 2017. He made his debut with the Riddim 21 project that featured songs by Beenie Man, Raine Seville, Dexta Daps, Vershon, Blakk Man, Tali O, Doni and Jahshawn among others.
He previously managed dancer-tuned-deejay D Clubz and is currently working with producer and recording artiste Waifuzion.
Glock and Middle Day by Chronic Law, Oh Jah by Jah Cure and Tip Inna It by Laa Lee are among the hit songs that Ireland Records has produced.
