Israel’s control must end
Dear Editor,
Will the world be content to be a speechless spectator to yet more civilian deaths and more besieged suffering and agony in Gaza from a US-funded Israeli invasion?
Gazans have already paid Israel more than double in its quest for revenge — 3,600 dead and thousands wounded — over Hamas’s killing of 1,400 Israeli civilians and taking 199 hostages.
The UN has called, even if late, for a cease-fire and humanitarian aid. That is the least that should be done.
As analyst Jeffrey Sachs pointed out, the situation really demands the end to Israel’s 56-year occupation of Palestinian land that its victory in the six-day 1967 war allowed it to have. Its hope that, that reality would fade away by normalising relations with the Saudis and other Arab countries, while its own citizens take up residence in that land, is now revealed to be completely irrational, unjust, and unreal.
Israel’s control of Palestinian land must immediately cease. Nothing else will bring peace to the region. The world must now demand it.
No thinking world citizen can sit by and allow further massacre. The unqualified support and aid — US$4 billion and more a year — with which the United States has been endorsing Israeli action must come to a full stop. The US is as guilty of the unnecessary killing as is Israel and as is Hamas, even if their armed resistance, respectively, to threats of elimination and to oppressive apartheid is understandable.
No amount of “chosen people” can justify the daily shedding of the blood of innocent children, women, and men. They must stop their endless warring and allow people to have peace.
