Independent JAS Electoral Review Committee advances reforms for AGM, election processes
The Independent Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) Electoral Review Committee, established by the Minister of Agriculture, Floyd Green, will shortly present a comprehensive set of recommendations to address and resolve the long-standing issues surrounding the conduct of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election processes of the JAS.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Director of Elections, Earl Simpson, held what has been described as “a productive meeting” at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining on October 20.
The committee’s mission is to streamline the processes and procedures involved in the JAS’ AGM and election, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a seamless transition of leadership within the organisation.
“The importance of this work cannot be overstated, as the JAS plays a pivotal role in Jamaica’s agricultural sector, impacting the livelihoods of countless farmers and stakeholders across the nation,” said a statement from the ministry.
The other members of the committee are attorney-at-law Donahue Martin, agriculturalist Idelle Brown, the ministry’s Chief Technical Director, Courtney Cole, and Senior Legal Officer, Marsha Locke.
“During the meeting, the committee updated the Minister and reaffirmed its commitment to the task at hand, emphasising the importance of a fair, transparent, and efficient process for JAS elections.
“They discussed the way forward and outlined the schedule for completing their review. The committee is on track to present its findings and recommendations to the ministry in November,” the statement added.
Minister Green expressed his satisfaction with the committee’s dedication. He stated that “the JAS is a cornerstone of Jamaica’s agricultural sector, and we are committed to ensuring that it operates at the highest level of integrity and efficiency. The work of this committee is a crucial step in that direction.”
The committee will next enter a phase of engagement with critical stakeholders within the JAS.
