Tributes continue to flow for Three’s Company star Suzanne Somers
American actress Suzanne Somers has died. The 76-year-old who came to prominence in the late 1970s playing the role of Chrissy Snow on the popular comedy series Three’s Company, passed away on October 15.
Somers had been battling breast cancer for several years. She is the fifth cast member from the series, which aired locally on JBC-TV, to have died. The others are John Ritter (who played Jack Tripper – 2003), Norman Fell (who played Mr Roper – 1998), Audra Lindley (who portrayed Mrs Roper – 1997) and Don Knotts (best known as Mr Furley – 2006).
Somers’s passing was confirmed by her spokesperson R Couri Hay in a statement.
“Suzanne, who ‘survived an aggressive form’ of breast cancer for over 23 years, ‘passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours’ on Sunday. She was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family,” the statement read.
Several celebrities took to social media to mourn the passing of Somers, who also starred in the 1990s sitcom Step by Step and She’s The Sheriff.
Comedian Kathy Griffin posted a message on Threads and shared, “I am shocked and saddened. Suzanne was a real pal and ‘connector’. She loved connecting people with one another. Also a real pioneer regarding equal pay for actresses in situation comedies where the man got substantially more salary than the woman,” she added.
Somers’ longtime Three’s Company co-star Joyce DeWitt — who famously portrayed Janet Wood — addressed the actress’ death in a statement to ET.
“My heart goes out to Suzanne’s family. They are a very close family — deeply connected and caring one to the other. I can only imagine how difficult this time is for all of them,” DeWitt said. “I’m sure Suzanne was greeted by Angels into the loving wisdom waiting for all of us on the other side, and I hope that will assist her family’s hearts in healing as they travel through this difficult time.”
Former child actress Erin Murphy, who famously played the role of Tabitha Stephens, the daughter of Darrin and Samantha Stephens on the 1960s sitcom Bewitched, also commented on Somers’ passing.
“Funny and beautiful. Rest in peace, Suzanne Somers. I had the pleasure of meeting her several times. Her scenes in American Graffiti inspired me to get a T-Bird,” said Murphy.
Somers was born Suzanne Marie Mahoney. It was her role as ditsy blonde Chrissy Snow that made her a household name.
In 1981 after asking for a raise per episode appearance on Three’s Company, Somers was phased out and soon fired. Somers didn’t let that bump in her acting career stop her from pursuing new avenues, including a Las Vegas act, hosting a talk show and becoming an entrepreneur.
She also appeared in several television movies and commercials and even hosted her own talk show on Lifetime.
