STETHS clip Irwin to get second round off and running
IRWIN, St James — Former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) escaped Friday’s first leg ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup second-round game against Irwin High with a 1-0 win at Irwin High in St James.
There were also wins for Glenmuir High against Morant Bay High, 3-0 and BB Coke beat Paul Bogle High 2-0.
STETHS were made to work hard and an 85th minute penalty from Donte Campbell was the difference but coach Omar ‘Rambo’ Wedderburn was happy with the out come.
“It’s always good when you travel and get three points. This was what we came here for, to be honest: the three points,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “We have another 90 minutes and that will start at 0-0 for us. We are very conscious of that fact.”
Norman Foster, the Irwin High coach, agreed it was a tough game to lose but said they saw enough of the STETHS team to give them hope in the next round.
“It’s not all lost, I think we put up a good fight against a good team but we have to bounce back in the second leg.”
It was Irwin’s first loss of the season and Foster said they had seen enough to know they can prevail.
Orane Watson scored a double to lead Glenmuir High to their easy win while Deandre Johnson scored the other goal.
Meanwhile, four schools with perfect win records in the first round, including defending champions Clarendon College, will start their second round campaign today when another 13 games are down to be contested.
Manchester High, Dinthill Technical and Happy Grove High are the other schools yet to drop any points that will also be in action.
Clarendon College face deCarteret College, one of the best third place finishers, in the first game of a double-header at Manchester High, starting at 1:30 pm.
