Guyana launches probe after guns, ganja found in barrel shipped from US
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – An investigation has been launched following the discovery of eight 9mm pistols and 11.2 pounds of ganja in a barrel during a routine customs check at Larparkan’s Timehri in Guyana on Wednesday.
According to police, a 36-year-old customs officer was on duty at the Laparkan bond when she examined a blue plastic barrel containing a quantity of clothing, footwear, 13 bottles of Moët champagne and two bottles of Hennessy among other items.
Also discovered nestled among the clothes and other products were the weapons. Their serial numbers were reportedly erased. Five bulky, transparent plastic parcels containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana were also found.
The barrel was allegedly shipped by BL Abrigo Shipping LAZA in Brooklyn, New York.
A 32-year-old female manager at BL Abrigo Shipping LAZA, who resides at Success, ECD and who went to the bond to ‘clear’ the barrel on behalf of the company, was interviewed by investigators and subsequently taken into custody.
Police took custody of the barrel, along with the narcotics.
