The Enchanting World of Wallpapered Powder Rooms
Powder rooms may be the smallest spaces in our homes but they can certainly pack a punch when it comes to design potential. These petite sanctuaries offer an opportunity to experiment with bold patterns, colours, and textures, making them the perfect canvas for showcasing the beauty of wallpaper. Wallpapering in powder rooms is a timeless design choice that can transform a functional space into a work of art and, in recent times, has become a popular choice for creating an inviting and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. It is a better choice than wall tiles, in a powder room, because there isn’t usually a shower, so little to no potential of moisture to affect the paper.
I love wallpapering powder rooms, as it brings in a splash of personality; creating a small space with big impact. Powder rooms are the perfect spaces to infuse personality and style and allow the homeowner to make a bold statement, express creativity, and create a memorable impression on their guests. Whether you prefer vibrant and bold patterns or subtle and understated designs, wallpaper provides an avenue for showcasing your personal taste and style.
Powder rooms are typically small in size, which means that even a small quantity of wallpaper can have a significant impact on the room’s overall aesthetic. Wallpaper can visually expand a space, making it feel larger and more inviting. By choosing the right pattern and colour scheme, you can create an illusion of depth and dimension, effectively enhancing the perceived size of the room.
One of the most alluring aspects of wallpapering a powder room is the abundance of design options available. Whether you gravitate towards classic, contemporary, or eclectic, there’s a wallpaper design to suit your taste. Some popular choices include:
Floral Prints: Bring the beauty of nature indoors with floral wallpaper. Whether it’s a traditional floral pattern or a more modern, abstract design, floral prints can add a touch of elegance and serenity to your powder room. In the powder room pictured here, I chose a textured, monochromatic floral that is modern and luxurious. I paired it with a coordinating pattern from the same line that was the subtle background pattern of the floral paper. This paper is a thick, heavy-duty durable paper that hangs really well and seamlessly.
Geometric Patterns: Geometric wallpapers are a versatile choice, offering a wide range of options from simple lines and shapes to intricate, eye-catching designs. They can create a sense of order and symmetry in your space. In the powder room pictured here, I used this soft sea-foam stripe on three walls, to envelop the room in a soft understated calm, reserving the feature wall that you see on entering the powder room for a textured wallpaper: Textured wallpaper adds depth and tactile appeal to your powder room. Options like grasscloth, silk, or embossed patterns add a touch of luxury and sophistication. And this one is no exception, it is bold and dramatic: For those who love to make a statement, however, the soft blues and greens make the space soothing and inviting.
Do not fear bold and dramatic wallpapers, with vibrant colours and striking patterns, these are excellent choices that can create a memorable focal point in your powder room.
Wallpapers are very easy to update if you’re someone who enjoys changing up your interior décor every few years. It’s relatively easy to update or change when you want a fresh look. Unlike paint, which requires a time-consuming and messy process to redo, and tiling which requires some major demolition and heavy and messy manual labour, wallpaper can be peeled off and replaced relatively quickly.
Wallpapering your powder room opens up countless possibilities for coordinating with other elements of the room’s design. You can match or contrast the wallpaper with your vanity, fixtures, and accessories to create a cohesive and harmonious look. This level of customisation allows you to craft a unique and visually pleasing space. In this space pictured, I converted wooden antler bowls, whose patterns mimicked that of the wallpaper, into a light fixture and a mirror, for a bit of ‘rustic glam’.
Powder rooms may be compact, but they are brimming with potential when it comes to design. The beauty of wallpapering in powder rooms will leave a lasting impression, transforming these functional spaces into works of art.
