Butler pleased with Mona High’s football growth
Craig Butler, the head coach and technical director of Mona High, says he is satisfied with his players’ development so far in this season’s Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Digicel Manning Cup. His comments come in the wake of their 4-0 win over Holy Trinity High at Barbican football field on Tuesday.
Robino Gordon starred the show for Mona with two clinical finishes in the 34th and 49th minutes, respectively. Demarion Harris contributed with a 67th-minute header, while Holy Trinity’s Kevin Hamilton conceded an own goal in the 80th minute.
Butler, while admitting the performance wasn’t perfect, says the boys’ effort has impressed him.
“They’re always committed; they are always understanding that it’s about improving themselves. Sometimes you hear us say 10 push-ups and they do it because they know that is also a part of their physical development. So we’re getting stronger and making sure we have less mistakes. I’m really happy with them and their performance,” said Butler.
Last month he told the Jamaica Observer that he intends to win the Manning Cup, Olivier Shield and the Champions Cup, and he is standing by that belief.
“As long as [we] keep our players healthy and focused and all goes well in the competition, we’ll be alright. I think we have a very solid bench, good reserves, we’re ready to go for it.”
Holy Trinity Assistant Coach Damoney Kildare said his team hasn’t given up hopes of advancing to the next round.
“The best third-placed is open so that’s what we’re trying to do in terms of points and diminish the goal difference. We just have to play every game not to lose, just try to accumulate points, kill off games early and put away our chances.”
Mona lead Group E with 15 points, with Holy Trinity sitting fourth on six points. St Catherine High moved to 12 points into second place after their 2-0 win over third-placed Norman Manley, who remain on nine points.
