Who will it be?
GREEN ISLAND, Hanover – The qualifiers for the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition from Zones A and B should be decided between Friday and Saturday when the return games in the first round continues.
Former champions Rusea’s High and Frome Technical are expected to confirm their places from Zone B on Friday when they take on Green Island High and Cambridge High, respectively.
On Saturday, 12-time champions Cornwall College and Irwin High should also secure their spots from Zone A.
The top two teams from each of the 14 zones will automatically advance to the second round, three teams from Zone C will advance while three others ‘best third-placed’ teams from two pools will make up the 32 teams in the second round.
On Friday, only a win for Green Island High over Rusea’s High would prevent both Rusea’s High and Frome Technical from advancing to the second round.
Rusea’s High and Frome Technical are both on 15 points each and need only a point to confirm their places in the second round.
Rusea’s High had edged Green Island High 1-0 in their first-round meeting and are expected win again on Friday.
Frome Technical had just got the better of Cambridge High 3-2 in the first round but after scoring 12 goals in back-to-back wins over Green Island High, the Westmoreland school should be able to get the better of Cambridge High on Friday.
Cornwall College leads Zone A with 17 points from seven games and a win over Green Pond High on Saturday would see them through, as long as Irwin High does not lose to St James High.
Cornwall College had come from a goal down to beat Green Pond 3-1 in the first round but Green Pond are coming off their first win of the season on Tuesday, beating Maldon High 3-0 and will be playing for pride.
On Tuesday Cornwall College came from a goal down at half-time to earn a tough 1-1 draw against Irwin High who remained unbeaten in 17 first-round games going back to last season.
Irwin High were held 1-1 by St James High in the first round and have drawn three of their seven games played and will hope to avoid sharing points again on Saturday.
Leo Campbell has scored in Irwin High last three games and they hope he will be up to the task again on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Maldon High who lost three games in a row will seek to get back on winning ways when they face Spot Valley High at home after beating then 4-3 in the first round.
