Petersfield vs Duanvale on Sunday
DUANVALE, Trelawny – ONE point separates Group D leaders Petersfield FC from Duanvale FC as they head into Sunday’s final round of matches in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Championships play-offs seeking a place in the semi-finals.
Petersfield FC of Westmoreland, who lead the group on 11 points, will face third-placed Reggae Youths of St James at Irwin High, while second-place Duanvale FC of Trelawny on 10 points will host last-placed Sandy Bay FC of Hanover who have failed to score any points.
Seaforth SC of St Thomas and St Bess United of St Elizabeth have already secured their places in the semi-finals while the winners of groups B and D will be decided on this weekend’s final set of games in the first round.
Three teams from the play-offs will qualify for the JFF Championships set to start later this season; they will replace Lime Hall Academy and Treasure Beach who were promoted to the Jamaica Premier League, and Albion Mountain who were banned from the championships after they failed to show up for a home game last season.
Only Petersfield FC or Duanvale FC can win the zone and advance but Reggae Youths could be playing for pride and could make Petersfield FC work hard.
In their first meeting, Reggae Youths gave up a 3-0 first-half lead and had to settle for a 3-3 draw, a result that effectively knocked the St James team out of contention for a semi-final spot.
With Duanvale expected to win their game against Sandy Bay and move to 13 points, only a win for Petersfield FC would suffice to see them make the next step to the championships.
In last weekend’s round of matches Petersfield FC beat Duanvale FC 4-0, with goals from Shewayne Barton and Rosario Whyte in the first half and Zidane Whyte and Kariff Smith in the second half.
Reggae Youths edged Sandy Bay 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal from Oliseh Haye.
