Men’s basketball finals on Saturday
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Cricket club Knights and Boys Club Warriors are set to start their Western Basketball Association (WBA) Men’s Invitational League best-of-three finals at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Saturday after Knights completed a come-from-behind 2-1 series win against Granville Jaguars in their semi-finals last weekend.
Knights, the number one-ranked team after the first round, won the third game 75-60 last Saturday and face Warriors who had beaten Catherine Hall All-stars 2-0 in their semi-finals.
If this Saturday’s first game of the best-of-three final is affected by rain, the game will be rescheduled for Sunday, October 1 with the other two games set for October 7 and, if necessary, game three would be played Sunday, October 8.
Meanwhile, Lady Elite1 won the Female Invitational on Sunday after they completed a 2-0 win over Lady Warriors, winning game two 33-22 with Nejron Stephenson leading all scorers with 21 points.
They led from start to finish and were ahead 6-4 after the first quarter and increased the margin to 10 points, 18-8, at half time and were ahead by 16 points 31-15 going into the final quarter.
In the men’s semis, Granville won the first game 71-65 but Knights tied up the series at 1-1 winning the second game 70-63, then outlasted Granville last Saturday to win by 15 points.
Alwyn Newsome, who led all scorers with 27 points, and Romario Senior who scored 20, combined for 47 for Knights who trailed early but rallied to earn a big win.
Granville Jaguars were in front 19-14 after the first quarter but Knights took a slim 36-29 lead at half-time before Granville cut the deficit to five at the end of the third quarter 50-55, but had no response to a big final quarter by Knights.
Jhaun Bryan also scored 10 points for Knights while Rayon Gardiner scored nine points.
Dave Black scored 23 points to lead Granville, David Gordon scored 15 points while Leroy Lawrence scored eight points.
