Jamaican-born, Cayman resident, fashion designer Jawara Alleyne, known for his punk-meets-pirate aesthetic challenging gender norms, drew inspiration from his Caribbean heritage for his first solo show and collaboration with local brand Mutiny.
Held in an East London converted church, the event began with a captivating spoken-word performance by his musician brother, Tafari.
Alleyne’s Spring 2024 Ready-to-Wear collection — dubbed ‘Beach Business’ — featured individual garments, including shirts, tees, minidresses, and maxiskirts, all adorned with his signature safety pin embellishments and jersey fabric. Silhouettes were provocatively reimagined, with both men’s and women’s looks challenging traditional gender norms.
Alleyne emphasised that his intent wasn’t overt sexiness, but rather comfort and self-expression, showcasing intriguing shapes and unique designs.
