Youngsters awarded $600k in scholarships
SELF Reliance Youth Development Organisation, in collaboration with their primary sponsor, Sampars Cash & Carry Limited (a subsidiary of the Derrimon Trading Company Group), recently hosted their annual awards ceremony, during which 38 students received awards.
The organisation was established with a focus on the significance of education and its profound influence on both personal success and national advancement. Aligned with this mission, the organisation has advanced its goals through various initiatives that ensure students’ advancement, and offers assistance within their homes and communities.
Kimone Wallace, a graduate of Merl Grove High School and a beneficiary of the Sampars Self Reliance Youth Development programme, was celebrated for getting eight grade ones in her CSEC exams. As a reward for her hard work she will receive $100,000 from the company’s Group Chief Financial Officer Ian Kelly, and has been offered an internship opportunity in the accounting department at Derrimon Trading Company Limited. This internship aligns with Wallace’s pursuit of studies in accounting at University of Technology, Jamaica.
The Self Reliance Youth Development Organisation serves families within and outside the Corporate Area, specifically those in Sampars’ surrounding communities. This year’s contributions total a sum of $600,000 being handed over to participating students.
“Throughout its existence the Self Reliance Youth Development Organisation has served as a valuable resource for parents, enabling them to contribute to the realisation of their children’s aspirations,” said the organisation’s president, Wilbert Edward. “This organisation has nurtured exceptional individuals from various communities across Jamaica, paving the way for and producing doctors, lawyers, and spiritual leaders. Aligned with Sampars Cash & Carry Limited, the Self Reliance Youth Development Organisation persists in strengthening the profound connection between parents and their children, cultivating a lasting heritage of accomplishments.”
The programme is specifically aimed at individuals categorised as dropouts during their secondary education. It serves as a pathway to an improved quality of life and also motivates all bursary recipients to set an example for their peers. By doing so they can extend this positive influence, ultimately contributing to the development of productive Jamaican citizens.
“We are thrilled to celebrate our enduring partnership of 14 years with the Self Reliance Youth Organisation, especially as they mark their remarkable 30th year of service; this collaboration has been pivotal in our shared mission to empower and inspire the youth. Together, we’ve achieved milestones that reflect our commitment to fostering self-reliance, growth, and success. This partnership continues to exemplify our dedication to creating a brighter future for the generations to come,” shared Romaine Dawson, operations manager of Sampars and Select Grocers.
“At Derrimon Trading Group we’re devoted to education’s transformative power. It’s not just about knowledge; it’s about forging a community, empowering youth, and fostering a better tomorrow. As we move forward we’re unwavering in our commitment to nurturing education, equipping young minds, and strengthening bonds within our society,” added group marketing officer of Derrimon Trading Limited, Kim Lee.
