Blue Vinyl streaks away in Caymanas Park feature
IT turned out to be an afternoon stroll in the park for Blue Vinyl as the Alford Brown trainee cantered home without breaking a sweat in the $1.25-million Kenneth Mattis OD Memorial Trophy feature at Caymanas Park on Sunday.
Blue Vinyl, a four-year-old chestnut colt, was never seriously challenged during the race and finished 3 1/4 lengths ahead of the competition in the Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m).
At the start of the feature event Javaniel Patterson broke Blue Vinyl cleanly as they chased Inspired Miracle (Shane Richards) through the clubhouse turn and onto the main track. In an attempt to steal a march, Inspired Miracle built up seven lengths on Blue Vinyl and company down the backstretch. Stomp The Rhythm (Shamaree Muir) pushed to the front as the half-mile (800m) turn approached but his lead was cut short when Blue Vinyl caught up to him and continued to widen his lead with each stride.
Turning for home, Blue Vinyl maintained a solid lead over rivals, and despite heavy urging from riders on the horses chasing, Patterson kept still in the saddle. On a usual canter to the wire Blue Vinyl beat Sunset Silhoutte (Reyan Lewis) and Get A Pepsi (Dane Dawkins).
The final time for the race was recorded at 1:57.0 (27.0 x 52.0 x 1:16.4 x 1:42.2).
Meanwhile, champion jockey Dawkins was not to be outdone, riding four wins on the nine-race card.
Dawkins’ winners were Cookie Day N Night for trainer Marlon Pusey in the third race; Norblar for trainer Gresford Smith in the fourth race; Unruly Dude for trainer Oral Hayden in the sixth race; and Airstream for trainer Robert Pearson in the ninth and final event.
Racing continues on Saturday.
