Rusea’s, Frome make winning starts
CAMBRIDGE, St James — Former champions Rusea’s High and Frome Technical opened their ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup campaign with wins over Cambridge High and Merlene Ottey High, respectively, both in Zone B on Saturday.
Deonjay Brown scored a second-half double for Rusea’s High in their 6-1 win over Cambridge High, in a game that started an hour late due to issues with match cards.
Rusea’s could have led by a wider margin at half-time but were still comfortable with a 3-0 margin, while at Frome the home team beat Merlene Ottey High for a third-straight time since they returned to the competition last year.
Rusea’s took some time to settle before Davalio Gillard fired them into the lead in the 18th minute, before Alaqa Logan doubled the advantage in the 34th minute and Khalil Joseph converted a penalty kick in the 38th minute for the half-time score.
Brown then bagged his brace in the 78th and 85th minutes, and Maliek Headed made it six in the 86th before Jayr Moore gave the home team a consolation in time added on.
At Frome, Stevaughn Spence, Wayne Mullings and Kemar Beckford — with a penalty — got on the scorecard for the home team.
