Parchment, Clayton post meet records in China
WORLD Championships medallists Hansle Parchment and Rushell Clayton set meet records at Saturday’s Diamond League meeting at Egret Stadium in Xiamen, China, in their first competition since the World Athletics Championships in Hungary, Budapest, last week.
Parchment won the 110m hurdles and Clayton took the women’s 400m hurdles in a sweep by Jamaicans while there were podium finishes for five other Jamaicans, including Kishane Thompson who rose to number six on the Jamaican all-time list after he set a new lifetime best 9.85 seconds (0.4m/s) in the men’s 100m while Candice McLeod equalled her season’s best in the women’s 400m.
Parchment, who won a silver medal in Budapest, came form third place over the last three barriers to run a season’s best 12.96 seconds (0.0m/s) and establish the meeting record, going under 13.00 seconds for the first time this season.
American Daniel Roberts, who took the bronze in Budapest, was second in 13.03 seconds while World Champion Grant Holloway, who led for most of the race, was third in 13.12 seconds.

Clayton, who won her second World Championships bronze in Budapest, set a meeting record 53.56 seconds, with compatriots Andrenette Knight (53.87 seconds) in second place and Janieve Russell third in 54.01 seconds.
Both Knight and Russell had finished seventh and eighth places, respectively, at the World Championships as they created history for Jamaica with three finalists.
Thompson, who shocked the National Stadium in Kingston when he ran 9.91 seconds in the first round of the men’s 100m at the JAAA national championships in early July, lowered his lifetime best to move up five places on the Jamaican list.
He trails only World Record holder Usain Bolt (9.58), Yohan Blake (9.69), Asafa Powell (9.72), Nesta Carter (9.78), and Steve Mullings (9.80), and is just ahead of Oblique Seville (9.86 seconds).
Former World champion Christian Coleman won with a meeting record 9.83 seconds, same as Zharnel Hughes and Noah Lyles, with last year’s World champion Fred Kerley third with 9.96 seconds.
Yohan Blake was sixth in 10.04 seconds, and national champion and World Championships relay bronze medallist Rohan Watson was ninth in 10.18 seconds while Ackeem Blake did not finish the race.
McLeod, who was part of the silver medal-winning women’s 4x400m relays at the World Championships last Sunday, ran 50.19 seconds for the runner-up spot in the women’s 400m, behind World Champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic (49.36 seconds) with American Lynna Irby-Jackson third with 50.45 seconds.
Rusheen McDonald was third in the men’s 400m in 44.82 seconds and Zandrion Barnes eighth in 45.29 seconds in his first Diamond League meet.
Former World and Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada, who was disqualified at the World Championships, won in a season’s best and meet record 44.38 seconds, with American Quincy Hall second in 44.38 seconds.
