Reggae Boy striker Antonio hails ‘perfect tactics’
LONDON, England (CMC) — Reggae Boy Michail Antonio has hailed Manager David Moyes’ “perfect tactics” in the wake of West Ham’s dominant 3-1 win over Brighton at the weekend.
Playing at London Stadium on Saturday, Antonio was one of three players to get on the scoresheet as the Hammers maintained their unbeaten start to the English Premier League season.
“It [win] was as good as the last week [against Chelsea]. It was the exact same tactics [but], to be fair, Chelsea had a lot of possession, Brighton had a lot of possession,” Antonio said.
“Like I said before the game, they were going to control a lot of the game [so] it was going to be [about] how we deal with it… and basically the tactics worked perfectly.
“I think we kept in our shape perfectly. One thing they wanted us to do is come out of our pockets for them to find them and open us up but we stayed narrow, we stayed tight, and showed them outside… but when we had opportunities we took them.”
Antonio was the provider for the first goal, getting down the left and producing a short pass into the box where new acquisition James Ward-Prowse converted from close range.
After Jarrod Bowen doubled the lead on 58 minutes Antonio netted his second in three games this season moments later, receiving a pass with his back to the goal on the edge of the 18-yard box and beating his marker before firing in at the far post.
“It was a little short pass back and I looked for Prowsey, and on the second shot he managed to put it in the back of the net,” Antonio said in reference to the opening goal.
“He [Ward-Prowse] put that ball in there in the first place and then he made the run into that position. There was nothing else I could do but give him the ball.”
In describing his strike the 33-year-old continued: “[I took] a touch, [shot] across goal into the bottom corner. I think last week was the better one but I like this one as well because I managed to beat my man and open it up.”
He opened his account against Chelsea with a similar goal a fortnight ago as West Ham also notched a 3-1 victory at London Stadium.
With the win Hammers went top of the league temporarily before Manchester City won 24 hours later to restore their place at the zenith.
Antonio said it had been important to get the three points, especially against a “quality” side like Brighton.
“Brighton always have a lot of possession. They’re a quality team and the way they play their football, it’s quality,” said Antonio, who featured last month for Jamaica at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
“They’re always going to be in and around it this year — always pushing, always challenging people — and it was a difficult game, but we’ve come out and done our jobs and got the three points.”
