400m gold medallist Watson eyes higher glory in half-lap race
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Despite winning the men’s 400m title at last week’s 19th World Athletics Championships at National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary, Antonio Watson says he is not giving up the 200m, leaving the door open to the possibility of running the double in the future.
A day after he won Jamaica’s second title in the event, Watson, who also won the last World Under-18 men’s 400m title in Nairobi, Kenya in 2017, spoke of his love for the half-lap race.
“Everybody who knows me knows I like the 200m,” he said at a reception held in his honour at Adidas House in Budapest, across the Danube river from the stadium.
“The 400m has always given me the honours,” he said. “But I am not giving up on the 200m.”
But when challenged that he might have to make a choice, he said, “I never said that I am going to throw away the 400m, but the 200m is not out of the picture.”
Watson has a 200m personal best of 20.49 seconds set this past season and has won gold medals in the event at the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships and the County of Cornwall Athletics Association Western Championships.
