#WorldChamps2023: Pinnock takes silver, bronze for Gayle in long jump
In a nail-biting long jump final, Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock and Tajay Gayle took home the silver and bronze medals respectively at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships on Thursday.
Pinnock led the event until the final round after leaping to 8.50m in his second-round attempt. But the veteran Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece, who needed a brilliant jump to surpass Pinnock, made an astonishing last-round jump of 8.52m to deny the Jamaican the gold.
National record holder, Tajay Gayle mustered up a season’s best jump of 8.27m in his last attempt to claim the bronze.
In the process, Gayle pushed his compatriot Carey McLeod, who also registered a mark of 8.27 to fourth.
