#WorldChamps2023: Jamaica’s Watson crowned 400m champion after 40-year wait
Decades after Jamaica’s first gold medal in the men’s 400m, Antonio Watson was crowned champion in the event at the World Athletics Champion at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary on Thursday.
Watson advanced to the final with a massive personal best of 44.13 seconds, the fastest qualifying time.
The lion-hearted 21-year-old powered to 44.22 seconds to win his nation’s first gold in the event in four decades. Bert Cameron was the first Jamaican to achieve this feat at the inagural staging of the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland in 1983.
Meanwhile his fellow countryman, Sean Bailey finished fifth in 44.96 seconds.
European record holder Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain claimed silver in 44.31 while America’s Quincy Hall won the bronze in a personal best of 44.37.
World record holder Wade Van Niekerk of South Africa finished seventh (45.11) while former world champion Kirani James of Grenada was disqualified for lane infringement.
