High Tea @ Terra Nova
Few places in Kingston can rival the majesty of Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel for the British ritual of High Tea. The iconic landmark was originally a colonial great house built by Harold Alexander in 1924 on 10 acres of land, as a wedding gift to his wife, prior to becoming in the 1930s the residence of Jamaican heiress Blanche Blackwell and her music-cum-hotel mogul son, Chris Blackwell.
The property, which was officially opened as a restaurant and hotel in 1959, has retained its old-world charm. Indeed, there’s nothing quite like a porte-cochère entrance to set the tone for an afternoon pour.
The hotel’s Champagne-fuelled High Tea, attended by Thursday Food on August 17, has not lost any of its charm.
Executive chef Kenard Swaby has taken the traditional offerings — miniature sandwiches, cakes, and pastries — and reimagined them with Jamaican influences. The result? A savoury and sweet voyage into the two different worlds.
