Sagicor Foundation awards over $5 million in new scholarships to 42 students
THE Sagicor Foundation has disbursed more than $5 million in new scholarships to 42 students at the tertiary and secondary levels.
A special scholarship awards ceremony was held at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel to commemorate the moment on August 9, as the foundation’s newly minted scholars were celebrated for their achievements.
During his welcome remarks at the awards ceremony, Christopher Zacca, president and CEO of Sagicor Group Jamaica, urged scholars to seize the moment of their success.
“To our scholarship recipients, I want you to remember that this achievement is not just a recognition of your academic excellence, but also a testament to your potential to create positive change in the world. As you embark on this new phase of your educational journey, I encourage you to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead with an open heart and a curious mind,” he expressed.
Fifteen tertiary recipients who are clients, children of clients, and team members’ children were awarded after a rigorous application process in which more than 800 students applied. Applicants were assessed based on academic performance, community involvement and volunteerism, strong leadership potential, and financial need. Tertiary scholarships are valued at up to $300,000 for a maximum of four years for their first-degree programmes.
The secondary scholarship award is provided to the children of clients and the children of Sagicor team members. Selection is solely based on the top PEP rankings of the application pool with a total of 20 students being awarded. Each scholarship is valued at $50,000 and is renewable for five years.
Jacqueline Donaldson, vice-president of corporate services, Sagicor Group Jamaica, congratulated the scholars during her awards ceremony overview presentation.
“We are proud of each one of you and we look forward to seeing great things from you as you go through your academic journeys. The Sagicor Foundation scholarship programme stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to fostering positive change and empowering the next generation of leaders,” she said.
Scholarships were also awarded to the three champion girls and three champion boys of the Sagicor/JTA National Athletics Championship – all finished the competition with the same number of individual points.
