MONTEGO BAY, St James – CORNWALL College will go after their second title in the preseason while Cambridge United will seek back-to-back holds on the St James Football Association Under-20 Football Competition when they meet in the final at Cornwall College on Friday, set to start at 3:30 pm.
The teams set up the clash after scoring contrasting wins in last Friday’s semi-finals, also played at Cornwall College. Alexander Cox scored a double as Cornwall College extended their unbeaten run with a 4-0 win over Spot Valley High, while Cambridge United held off Granville United 2-1.
It was the second time Cambridge United had beaten Granville United by that scoreline this season, while Cornwall College atoned for a 0-0 draw against Spot Valley High in the first round.
The final promises a close encounter after the teams, Cornwall College and Cambridge United, had played out a 1-1 draw in their first-round meeting on August 2, with both goals coming from the penalty spot.
While Cornwall College, who also won the Irwin Cup event last month, have been unbeaten in the competition Cambridge United were beaten by Spot Valley High — but after they had already secured their place in the semi-finals.
Cox has emerged as a goal threat for Cornwall College while Braxton Richards, who missed most of the early preseason games, is back. Rackeem Grizzle has also been part of the scorers.
Tajay McIntyre has been consistent for Cambridge United while Shamour Smith and Davion McLean could pose some problems for the Cornwall College defence.
In five games played only Cambridge United has managed to beat the Cornwall College defence — albeit from the penalty spot.
Both teams were comfortable in the semi-finals as Cambridge United repeated their first-round 2-1 win over Granville United, with goals from Roahan Gail in the 23rd and Shakkel Brown in the 35th minute giving them a lead.
Demor Peterkin pulled a goal back for Granville United in the 43rd minute but Cambridge United held on to book their place in the semi-finals.
After playing out a 0-0 draw in the first round Cornwall College dominated Spot Valley and led 3-0 at half-time, with Cox scoring in the 19th and 45th minutes and Rackeem Grizzle in the 39th minute.
Raheem Lee, who was a first-half substitute, added a fourth in the 90th minute as Cornwall College maintained their unbeaten run through the competition.
