‘Balla’ returns for third season, continues to explore issues affecting J’can youth
Jamaican web series ‘Balla’ has returned for a third season.
The series which debuted in 2020 has steadily seen growth in its reach, with its YouTube channel having surpassed 200,000 subscribers.
Speaking at the watch party held to usher in the new season, CEO of Barracks Entertainment, writer and director of Balla, Fabian Barracks, explained that the growth in viewership is in part fuelled by an increased demand for local content.
“Today, we proudly boast a remarkable growth in our platforms. Our YouTube channel has surpassed 200,000 subscribers. Embracing TikTok has proven to be a game-changer, as we now have over 40,000 dedicated followers on that platform as well. The popularity of TikTok among Jamaican youth underscores the demand for local content that resonates with them. They are eager to see themselves and their culture represented in the media they consume daily,” said Barracks.
According to Barracks, Balla is filling a significant gap in the entertainment landscape, adding that addressing youth issues makes the series unique.
“One of the most significant strengths of Balla is its ability to connect with its viewers on a personal level. Many young people watching the characters on the show can see themselves reflected in the stories and experiences portrayed, giving them a sense of hope and validation. This sense of representation can be incredibly powerful in inspiring and motivating young individuals,” said Barracks
“Recognising the financial constraints that many youths face, Balla’s free availability ensures that it remains accessible to its primary audience without any barriers,” he added.
Barracks explained that season three continues to build on youth-related topics such as youth and the law, teenage pregnancy, sex and sexuality, and bullying.
“This season, we shine a spotlight on a crucial and timely topic: students living with disabilities. We candidly examine whether our schools are adequately equipped to address the unique challenges they face. This thought-provoking discussion aims to advocate for greater inclusivity and understanding, striving for positive changes in the educational landscape,” said Barracks
“Prepare yourself for a gripping season that explores the realities of youth today, exposing their triumphs and struggles. Balla season 3 promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions, inspiring meaningful dialogue and encouraging a more compassionate and informed outlook on the world around us,” Barracks added.
In speaking about the new additions to the cast which include popular social media influencers Shelly Ann Curran, Khaka Highflames, Brandon Highflames and Monae, Barracks noted that they were helping the series to tap into a more diverse audience and would add fresh perspectives to the show.
The watch party for Balla, which was sponsored by Jamaica AIDS Support for Life (JASL) and Healthy Together: M-Facts, was held at Johnny’s place on Friday.
In attendance at the event were cast members and fans who received access to free HIV and Syphilis testing, condoms and M Pox prevention information.
