Page 2… 17 Years Later
Champagne flowed at the Worthington, Spanish Court Hotel in 2016, when Page 2 ushered in a decade of decision, according to the late Jamaica Observer Chairman Gordon “Butch” Stewart,” to start Page 2, which has brought society to the front pages of a national newspaper… in the most beautiful way as it has become the number one place to be seen”.
His daughter Jaime, who played an integral role in the birth of the daily dose of social, described it as “the guest list standard. Your round-the-clock dedication to showcasing Jamaica’s social tapestry [bringing] colour, excitement, glamour, pizzazz and fun into our mornings, and every day of life”.
It’s safe to say that Page 2 at 17 has been fully vaccinated and boosted, has survived a pandemic and remains The Rock’s zeitgeist.
Never ones to rest on one’s laurels, we paused on Monday, April 10, 2023 to reflect on how much has changed since that Saturday afternoon of April 8, when in the middle of a Lee’s Fifth Avenue Fashion Observer shoot the call came to deliver Page 2 on Monday, April 10. We’ve not looked back.
“It’s no easy feat,” shared Adam Stewart who today chairs the Jamaica Observer board. “To invent, transform and remain current year after year, so to mark a milestone of 10 successful years is an extremely noteworthy and incredible achievement.”
It’s pretty fair to deduce that Plum Sykes’ chick lit Bergdorf Blondes has today been replaced by Netflix rom/com/drama Emily in Paris. Thankfully, we still have dedicated left wrist-turners, whose mornings are made brighter by the social content found on Page 2.
To ensure continuity, to disturb the status quo, and scale new heights, it was imperative to embrace Generation Z. The Zoomers who swipe minutely, step out with lip gloss but no pen or paper, avoid long reads at all costs, keep up to date with the latest ‘fits and adore Shenseea and SZA.
We did just that recently, convening at Candy Craze with 17 tweens, some whose births were actually announced on Page 2, others whose parents’ nuptials were celebrated on Page 2 and those who were mere thoughts when Page 2 was birthed.
We’ve work to do. Lots! If we plan to engage the Zoomers. We remain undaunted however — audacity of hope was in motion long before Barack!
