Major Steppa celebrates Selassie anniversary with ‘Thank You Jah’
Many Africans and Rastafarians observe July 23 with reverence. That is the birthdate of Emperor Haile I of Ethiopia who was one of the 20th Century’s pivotal figures.
Singjay Major Steppa from Ghana celebrated the monarch’s 131st anniversary with his song, Thank You Jah.
Produced by Smuchiz, the roots-reggae single was actually released on July 7. It is homage to Selassie I who was overthrown by Ethiopian rebel forces in 1974.
“The role of Jah and spirituality in my life is deeply personal and significant. Jah, or God, holds great importance to me as a source of guidance, strength, and moral compass. It shapes my values, provides a sense of purpose, and influences my decisions and actions,” said Major Steppa, who is from Accra, the Ghanaian capital.
Accra has one of the most vibrant reggae colonies in Africa. Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale and Rocky Dawuni are the most popular reggae acts from the West African country.
While his strongest following is in Ghana and other West African countries of Nigeria, Togo and Liberia, Major Steppa has collaborated with Jamaican acts such as Av&nte (on In The Mood), to help expand his base.
He considers Keep On Moving and Put In The Work to be his biggest songs.
Although it was announced by rebels that Emperor Haile Selassie I died in August, 1975 at age 83, many of his supporters still question details of his death.
