‘This place isn’t safe!’
The Jamaica Observer has been reliably informed that Jhaniele Fowler reported to the Netball Jamaica (NJ) hierarchy that US$400 (J$75,000) went missing from her room after she returned from a training session with the team.
The 34-year-old Fowler, who is rated as the best shooter in the world, expressed her dissatisfaction about the incident on her Instagram page, saying that she was robbed and faced attempts of intrusion into her room in Cape Town.
“This is so unfortunate, this place isn’t safe. First, they stole money from my purse, now people are trying to come in on us in our rooms. Really?” she said.
Karen Rosen, media liaison officer for the Sunshine Girls team, said the incident has triggered a move to boost security at the hotel where the Sunshine Girls and several other teams are staying for the tournament, which tips off today.
“We have spoken to the hotel, World Netball security and the police have also been called in and they have tightened security around the hotel,” said Rosen.
“There will be stricter protocols in terms of persons going and coming because it is a busy hotel with restaurants and the different activities going on there, but in terms of access to the floors and ensuring that the team is secured, that has been tightened,” she said.
Rosen shared that the Sunshine Girls have been assigned two security personnel by World Netball for the tournament.
“But we don’t have any concerns about physical safety or anything like that at the moment because we are just trying to keep the girls focused on the World Cup and try to make them as comfortable as they can be,” she said.
“There are a lot of security on the streets and around the hotel, and as far as I have been told, they have assigned additional security to the hotel,” Rosen stated.
