Good second round for Jamaicans at Caribbean Golf Champs
Some members of the Jamaican team had a good second round in the 66th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship at the Magdalena Grand Resort in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.
They include Justin Burrowes, Ryan Lue, William Knibbs, and Rocco Lopez on the male team and Emily Mayne and Mattea Issa on the female team.
Burrowes scored two over par 74 on top of his 75 on the first day for a combined total of five over par 149 to move to eighth place on the leader board. He was tied for 10th place with six other golfers, including three Jamaicans at the end of the first round.
Lue scored four over par 76 to be tied for 12th place with Rocco Lopez who scored six over par 78 and are both on seven over par 151. Lopez was in third place at the end of day one after posting one over par 73, which was the best score of all the members on the Jamaican team.
Knibbs, the most senior member of the male team, posted five over par 77 for a two-day total of 152. He was holding down the 16th spot along with two other golfers.
Zandre Roye, who had a good first-round score of three over par 75, posted seven over par 79 for round two for 10 over par 154 over the two rounds to occupy the 20th spot with two other golfers.
Aman Dhiman posted two days of eight over par 80 for a combined total of 16 over par 160, but has moved up three places to be tied for 29th on the leader board.
Max Alveno of defending champion Puerto Rico remains at the top of the leader board with scores of four under par 68 and one over par 73 for a combined total of three under par 141. Rhadames Pena of the Dominican Republic moved into second place on one under par 143 (73, 70), while Ian Aldarondo (146) and Ryan Peters (146) of host country Trinidad and Tobago are tied for third place.
The Jamaican men are looking to better their fourth-place finish in the championship in 2022 as they compete for the Hoerman Cup.
Junior player Emily Mayne posted the best second-round score of the female team. She scored four over par 76 to close the two days at 15 over par 159, which puts her in sixth place with two other golfers, including Mattea Issa.
Issa, also a junior, was ahead of the other three ladies on the Jamaica team at the end of the first round, but was caught by Mayne at the end of the second round. Issa scored eight over par 80 for a two day total of 159 and is now tied with Mayne in sixth place along with Inyoung Yoo of the Dominican Republic.
Mayne and Issa have combined to move the Jamaican female team from fourth place to third place in their quest to retain the George Teale Trophy which they won last year.
President of the Jamaica Golf Association, Jodi Munn-Barrow, had a challenging round of 15 over par 87 on top of her first round of 82 to end at 25 over par 169 and was occupying the 10th place in the ladies section.
The other junior player on the team Anoushka Katri scored 32 over par 104 for a combined total 205, while holding down the 17th place.
The top three ladies at the end of round two were Holly McLean of the Cayman Islands on one under par 143, Yae Eun Kim of the Dominican Republic on five over par 149, and Camila Negroni of Puerto Rico with a score of eight over par 152.
The golfers will tee off at 8:00 am today for the third and final round of the three-round championship.
