Tributes for Nathan Reid
TRIBUTES have been pouring in for former Cornwall College and University of Wyoming student athlete Nathan Reid who was killed in a crash in Wyoming, USA, on Monday morning. The 22-year-old was the son of High Court Judge Icolin Reid and noted attorney-at-law Dalton Reid.
The young man’s body was discovered near his vehicle on US Highway 18/20 near Orin Junction and south of Douglas, Wyoming, according to a report on the university’s track and field website on Monday.
Reid, who was supposed to start his final year at University of Wyoming where he was majoring in mechanical engineering, was interning at an engineering company in the state and was thought to be on his way to work when the crash happened.
Track and field fans in Jamaica as well as members and coaches of Reid’s University of Wyoming track and field team were shocked on Monday afternoon when news broke about his death.
The discus thrower/shot putter was remembered as “an easy-going person, always in a good mood”, and someone who “always had positive energy”.
Reid competed for Cornwall College and was a finalist in the Class 2 shot put in 2016, and made the final in the high school boys’ discus throw at the Penn Relays in 2019.
Earlier this year he was awarded the David Miller Engineering scholarship at University of Wyoming. This is an honour given to an engineering student who has maintained a high grade point average while also being outstanding in sports.
The highlight of Reid’s three years at Wyoming came in his second season when he qualified for the discus throw final at the NCAA Division One outdoors championships, the same year he achieved his lifetime best of 55.59m which was also 10th-best of all time for the school’s ranking list.
On Monday a post in his memory on University of Wyoming’s track and field Instagram page said, “Forever a Cowboy. Forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, Nathan.” Another read, “He will be remembered for his contagious kindness; he brought joy in every room. Forever a Cowboy.”
Martin Thomas, an attorney-at-law in Montego Bay, also posted, “Sending love from your Cornwall College family. You did everything right, no one could ask more of you. Your passing was untimely and unfortunate. Nathan, just know that you made us proud. Sleep in eternal and everlasting peace and may God’s light shine perpetual upon you.”
Reid’s former Wyoming teammate Anna M Gilles wrote, “Breaks my heart, he was the sweetest soul, best teammate, always had a smile on his face and knew how to make everyone laugh. My love goes to his family. I’m so sorry for your loss, you raised an amazing son.”
