Solid first-round scores for Jamaica at amateur golf tourney
JAMAICA put down some solid first-round scores at the start of the 66th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship at Magdalena Grand Resort in Trinidad & Tobago.
The scores for the six-man male team were Rocco Lopez, one over par 73; William Knibbs, Zandre Roye, Justin Burrrowes and Ryan Lue were all on three over par three over par 75; and Aman Dhiman was five strokes back on eight over par 80.
Lopez was tied for third place along with four others on the leader board, while the next four men were tied for 10th place along with three other golfers. Dhiman was tied for 32nd place with three others.
Max Alveno of defending champions Puerto Rico was at the top of the leader board on four under par 68. Evan Pena, also of Puerto Rico, was three shots back on one under par 71 in second place.
The Jamaican men are looking to better their fourth-place finish in the 2022 championship as well as get their first hold on the Hoerman Cup.
Junior player Mattea Issa was ahead of the other three ladies on the Jamaica team. She posted seven over par 79 and was tied for sixth place with Inyoung Yoo of the Dominican Republic.
Jamaica’s many-time national golf champion and senior player on the female side as well as president of the Jamaica Golf Association, Jodi Munn-Barrow was three strokes back on 10 over par 82 in eighth place.
Emily Mayne, a junior player who recently came back from the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship (CAJGC) where she placed second in the Under-18 category, scored 11 over par 83 for her first round which puts her immediately behind Munn-Barrow in ninth place.
The other junior player as well as the only new player on the team, Anoushka Katri, scored 29 over par 101 and ended the round in 17th position. Katri represented Jamaica in the Under-15 category during the recently held CAJGC.
The top three ladies at the end of round one were Holly McLean of the Cayman Islands and Yae Eun Kim of the Dominican Republic, who were tied for first place on one over par 71. Paola Rosario of Puerto Rico on three over par 75 secured third place.
The local ladies are on a quest to hold on to the George Teale Trophy, which they won last year.
The golfers will tee off Thursday morning for the second round of the three-day championship.
