Morgan Heritage’s ‘homecoming’
After more than 10 years, three-time Grammy Award-winning reggae group Morgan Heritage had what they described as their “homeland homecoming” at Reggae Sumfest on Saturday night.
Along with classics, the group also gave patrons a taste from their new album, The Homeland, that was recently submitted for Grammy consideration.
“The highlights would have to be the tributes to our father Honourable Bishop Ras Denroy Morgan, Bobby “Digital” Dixon, our uncle Toots Hibbert of Toots and The Maytals, and lastly the performance of Who Deh Like U from our latest album The Homeland with an ‘xtravaganza’ featuring live horns and dancers would have to be the highlights for the night,” Mojo Morgan told the Jamaica Observer on Sunday.
Morgan also basked in the generous response the group received from patrons at the event.
“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and, after not performing in Jamaica for so long, it was truly a great feeling to have that kind of homecoming,” he said.
On the other hand, members of the group remain openminded about the possibility of yet another Grammy nomination, but they are not at all feeling pressured.
“We’re not optimistic at all because accolades aren’t guaranteed to any artiste. The greatest achievement for us is being able to release our first global music album to rave reviews and a chart-topping debut in over 20 countries around the world,” Morgan said.
He added: “Every category has different criteria, and the creativity of The Homeland gives it a good chance to be recognised by the Academy in several categories due to its broad appeal and sound that seamlessly blends the sounds of Africa with the sounds of Jamica and the Caribbean for that matter.”
The entertainer also said that the group is currently on a tour dubbed The Homeland Xtravaganza.
After decades in the industry, he added that Morgan Heritage remains grateful for continuous support.
“We’d like to tell all our fans in Jamaica, thank you for so much love and support over the years and for being the catalyst to a great career thus far. We’re extremely grateful to our loyal, royal fanbase for keeping us in demand on stages across the globe and don’t forget the best is yet to come… The Homeland Xtravaganza will be coming to a city near you. The next stop on The Homeland World Tour is Belize, Guyana, Tortola, and our other home in Brooklyn, New York, where we end this leg of the summer tour in the city we were all born in. We love you all,” Morgan said.
