Mystery credit card charges take toll on Scotia customer’s well-being
Dear Claudienne,
I have been having an issue with the Bank of Nova Scotia since November-December 2022 concerning overseas transactions totalling $100,051.72 done on my Magna credit card and of which I have no knowledge.
The November transaction, I have noticed from my statement, was re-sent in December 2022. Scotiabank has refused to remove these transactions from my statement, claiming that they were done by the primary card holder (me). The card being equipped with a chip makes it impossible for it to have been cloned.
I have been in dialogue with their call centre (Nov-Dec 2022/January & April 2023) and with the Portmore operations manager and branch manager, (April/May 2023 through phone calls) to no avail. My Magna credit card consists of me as the primary user and two supplemental cards for my daughter and her husband, of which they were the sole users until July 2022.
Please also note the following:
(A) In February-April 2022 the card got overrun.
(B) My daughter’s husband left the island in April 2022 and in June-July 2022 I called the call centre and asked them to remove her husband from the supplemental.
I was then issued with new cards for myself and my daughter. In late November 2022 I noticed an overseas transaction on my statement which I made Scotiabank aware of and was issued new cards.
In December 2022 I again saw various overseas transactions on my statement and these were again brought to Scotiabank’s attention, resulting in the bank again issuing new cards to me and my daughter.
I have not left the island at any time during this period (see passport attachment), to which my church and work can give evidence. My credit card has been soley in my possession, and which I have been using to do my day-to-day transactions here in Jamaica.
I personally went to the bank and collected the letters with cards and signed for them in July, November and December 2022. My daughter has not activated her cards to this day (the July card remained in Jamaica).
My daughter went overseas between June-November 2022 and an online transaction was done to book a ticket from Atlanta to New York from my primary card, which was duplicated and was refunded. My overseas transactions have been online and have been to Amazon only.
This issue is dragging on too long and has been taking a toll on my emotional and psychological well-being. The 19 overseas transactions that I did not make have been accumulating interest since November 2022, which I am forced to pay.
I would appreciate your help to have this matter with Scotiabank resolved.
