Keywee walks the ‘Crocodile Street’
Dancehall artiste Keywee is fully aware that the streets of Jamaica are dangerous because of the high crime and murder rate. That’s why he coined the phrase ‘Crocodile Street’ in his new single.
“The feedback to the song has been great, the fans said it resonates with them because it paints a picture of what is going on in our island, the darkness, the struggle and it shows how people need to be tough to survive, the artiste whose real name is Damian Morgan, said.
“The inspiration behind this song was just my reality, the toughness of everyday life, and the rhythm just led me in that direction, Keywee added.
The single, Crocodile Street, is produced by Seven Gate Records, the label to which he inked a recording deal. The song was released two weeks ago.
The artiste is now turning his attention towards completing a six-song EP to be released later this year.
“The sky ah the limit but I am working hard to achieve my goals within the music so I can help the unfortunate ones around me,” Keywee said.
He first got involved in music by mimicking Beenie Man and Bounty Killer songs until he began to pen his own material. He inherited the love of music from his father who was fond of sound systems like Stone Love and Metromedia.
“I had the love of music before I was even born and then when I started visiting studios, the love grew even more,” he said.
He re-christened himself ‘Keywee’ in homage to the popular kiwi fruit.
“The name Keywee means that I am just the girls’ dem fruit and key stands for the key to open the gate for the label I sign to and the wee stand for the young who are yet to go through that gate,” he said.
He recorded his first single, ‘Blessings a Pour’ in 2010 and since then, he has worked diligently honing his craft.
Keywee believes that ‘Crocodile Street’ has the potential to be a huge hit.
“We will be shooting a video for the song, plus we have two other singles to drop after that,” he said.
