WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz open against France
Following the completion of the Concacaf Gold Cup, when Mexico were crowned champions for a record ninth time, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup takes centre stage as big-hitters Netherlands and Portugal go head to head on Sunday (July 23), then a few hours later one of the favourites to lift the title, France, will square off against the exciting Jamaica Reggae Girlz team.
Event # 1 – W/Cup W – Netherlands vs Portugal — 2:00 am
Netherlands and Portugal will kick off Group E proceedings in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, being held in New Zealand and Australia, on Sunday in an eagerly anticipated clash. Netherlands made the final of the most recent World Cup, in 2019, losing to the USA Women’s team 2-0. Meanwhile, Portugal didn’t qualify for that World Cup tournament which was held in France. Heading into the World Cup, Netherlands have won seven of their last ten matches in all competitions including big 4-1 and 5-0 beatings of Poland and Belgium, respectively.
On the other hand, Portugal’s women will be making their debut at the World Cup, having qualified by winning 10 of their 13 matches. They did play in the Euros last year but exited the tournament at the group stages having failed to win any of their three matches. However, the Portuguese side head into this tournament in good form having gone on an unbeaten three-match run, including a 2-0 win over Ukraine and playing to a 0-0 draw with the powerful England team. Indeed, Portugal have won seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions, drawing two and losing just once.
KEY STATS
• Netherlands – have scored in seven of their last nine matches in all competitions.
• Portugal – have won nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions and have scored in their last 10 matches in a row.
• Both sides – when both teams last faced each other in the Women’s European Championship, The Netherlands defeated Portugal 3-2 in July 2022.
The betting tip: The Netherlands win.
Event # 2 W/Cup W – France vs Jamaica – 5:00 am
France and Jamaica meet in their first Group F match of the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, July 23. France reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup in 2019, having been eliminated by eventual winners, the USA, 2-1. Jamaica failed to advance beyond the group stage at the 2019 tournament, after going winless in their three group matches — with Havana Solaun scoring the lone goal in the tournament for the Jamaicans.
Having been knocked out at the quarter-finals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, France went one stage further at the Euro 2022 last year, topping their group, going on to beat the Netherlands to reach the semi-finals, but were then beaten 2-1 by Germany to suffer heartache at another major tournament.
Jamaica created history at the last edition of the Women’s World Cup, becoming the first country from the Caribbean to qualify for a Women’s World Cup tournament. However, the Jamaican Reggae Girlz gained some attention with some eye-catching displays, but still failed to win any of their group matches. Four years later, the Reggae Girlz hope to change all that, starting with their group opener against the highly rated France. Khadija Shaw, who was the second-highest goalscorer in the English Super League this season, will be aiming to continue her magnificent form in front of goal for the Jamaicans.
The Reggae Girlz have been an inspiration for rising from the ashes, as in 2003, after failing to qualify for the World Cup, the team was disbanded a year later. But, in 2019, all that changed when Cedella Marley stepped in to assist the Reggae Girlz. Prior to her son bringing home a flier asking parents to consider helping the Reggae Girlz, Marley was not familiar with the women’s programme, but when she learned of its plight, she took action. She became a global ambassador, raising money and awareness through a non-profit foundation, and recorded a song, Strike Hard, with her brothers Stephen and Damian. And the rest, as they say, is history. The Reggae Girlz gave impressive performances at the Concacaf Women’s tournament and the previous edition of the World Cup.
KEY STATS
• France – have played at four Women’s World Cups and have scored 32 goals so far and currently are ranked at number five in the FIFA World ranking.
• Jamaica – have played at just one Women’s World Cup, scoring just one goal and are currently ranked number 43 in the FIFA World ranking.
• Both sides – Both teams will enter the tournament having lost their last matches, France lost 1-0 to Australia on July 14, while Jamaica were beaten 3-0 by the Australians earlier this year on February 22.
The betting tip: France win.
