Sumfest heats up!
Tommy Lee Sparta, Masicka, Teejay, Valiant, Chronic Law, and Jada Kingdom are just a few of the top acts that patrons attending the 30th anniversary of Reggae Sumfest are excited to see onstage this year.
The two-night festival kicks off tonight at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay, St James.
Attempts made by the Jamaica Observer‘s Splash to get a comment from music executive, producer and director of Sumfest Cordell “Skatta” Burrell proved futile; however, social media users have been very vocal about their top picks for this staging.
“Can’t wait! I need to take a really good nap on Friday,” one Instagram user commented.
“Sumfest will be nice this year!” another social media user commented.
One more user chimed in with: “This me cah wait fah. Sumfest ago hot this year!”
After a two-year hiatus, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Reggae Sumfest returned last year.
The Observer had reported that acts such as Skeng, Intence, Iwaata, Jahshii, 450, and Brysco made a huge impression on the thousands who gathered inside the venue. The women were few in number, but that paled in comparison to the impact they had on the entertainment factor on the respective nights.
Leading the pack was the crowned Queen of Dancehall, Spice, dancehall’s ‘It-Girl’ Shenseea, and the always-controversial Ishawna. Though none of these women will hit the stage this year, the line-up still has the potential to blow away the thousands who will leave from near and far to converge in the second city.
During the launch of Sumfest last month, one of the founding fathers of the festival Robert Russell also welcomed the notion by mayor of Montego Bay Councillor Leeroy Williams to refer to Montego Bay as Sumfest City.
“Sumfest has been an institution in Montego Bay. I want to thank the mayor for declaring Montego Bay, Sumfest City. I think we should do a petition to change the name permanently and just call it Sumfest City, instead of Montego Bay,” Russell noted at the time.
Other acts on this year’s line-up include Minister Marion Hall, Richie Spice, Tanya Stephens, Morgan Heritage, Romain Virgo, Kabaka Pyramid, Gyptian, Jah Vinci, Topmann Donzlife, Vanessa Bling, and Moyann.
