Celebrating the unsung heroes of education
Dear Editor,
Even though we are not in the month of May, we have to be cognisant and constantly reminded there exists a special breed of individuals who have dedicated their lives to shaping the minds of future generations.
They are the educators, the unsung heroes who tirelessly work to impart knowledge, inspire curiosity, and ignite a passion for learning. While Teachers’ Day may be designated on a specific date, it is essential to recognise that teachers deserve appreciation and gratitude every day. In Jamaica, one notable initiative that honours the exceptional service of educators in Jamaica is the Golden Torch ceremony, which serves as a testament to the remarkable contributions made by educators, highlighting their unwavering commitment to shaping the nation’s youth.
Conceived by Ray Howell, this annual event recognises members of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) who have dedicated a minimum of 35 years to the field of education. The ceremony, traditionally held during the first week of July, serves as a platform to acknowledge and celebrate the remarkable achievements of these educators. This year’s event witnessed an awe-inspiring milestone as educators were recognised for a total of 7,620 years of service. The staggering number serves as a powerful testament to their unwavering dedication and the countless lives they have touched. As a nation, we owe a profound debt of gratitude to these exceptional individuals who have selflessly committed their careers to the betterment of the Jamaican society.
Personally, I have had the privilege of being influenced by outstanding educators such as Marlene Bartley and Lorna Gow-Morrison during my time at Shortwood Teachers’ College. Additionally, Murdina Latty-Johnson at Alston High School stands as a pillar of inspiration, continuously going above and beyond to ensure her students’ success. All three stalwarts were awarded at the ceremony for their contributions to education in Jamaica.
It is crucial to recognise that every day holds the potential for expressing gratitude to our educators. Teachers are the architects of knowledge, the nurturing guides who mould young minds and equip them with the tools for success. As we reflect upon our own educational journeys, we must cherish and express gratitude for the teachers who have played a transformative role in our lives.
Together, let us acknowledge that teachers are the true nation-builders, deserving of our unwavering support, appreciation, and recognition every single day.
