Dane Nelson continues to enjoy good form in Canada
DANE “Warrior Chief” Nelson, a popular four-time Jamaican champion jockey who has been riding well, feels he will have a very successful riding season on the international circuit this season.
Nelson, who is presently riding at the Century Mile racetrack in Edmonton, Canada, won aboard the Gonzalo Anderson-trained Bare Back Jack on Sunday, bringing his season total to 23. Nelson is two wins ahead of Alezander Marti (21 wins) in the jockeys’ standings. Jose Martinao Asencio is third with 20 wins, and Enrique Alonzo Gonzalez is fourth with 15 wins.
“Winning races on the international racing circuit is always beneficial because it draws attention to you and helps to build your brand. I want to continue to build the Dane Nelson brand,” Nelson told The Supreme Racing Guide of the Jamaica Observer.
“Everyone’s desire is to be referred to as a champion jockey wherever they ride. It would be fantastic to win a championship up here but it will be difficult. The aim for now is to ride as many winners as possible and see where that takes me. I am riding in good form and getting the rides; all I have to do now is keep working hard and putting away the mounts. I just want to win races, and I enjoy competing in them.
“Thank you to everyone who helped me get rides, and I will keep doing my best,” the bustling rider stated.
Backless Dress Jack won the first race, a six-and-a-half-furlong Starter Allowance race, by a length and three quarters in 1:16.77.
“The horse ran a fantastic race. When it was time to leave the horse performed admirably. It was an excellent performance and I am delighted with the victory. I believe this will be a good season for me,” Nelson, who had just ridden a winner at Assiniboia Down, added.
Since he started riding on the North American circuit Nelson has ridden 355 winners from 1,900 rides, and has garnered earnings of over CAN$4 million. Nelson’s winners include many Graded Stakes victories, with the biggest being the 2017 CAD$150,000 Northlands Park Canadian Derby aboard Double Bear.
