Blaise Bicknell to face American Tracey in ITF M25 tournament final
Jamaica’s top tennis player Blaise Bicknell will oppose James Tracy from the United States in the final of the ITF M25 tournament in Laval, Quebec, Canada, today starting at 12:00 pm
Bicknell, who has been in excellent form this season, brushed aside Canada’s Liam Draxl 6-2, 6-3 in the semi-final on Saturday to book his place in the final of the competition.
The 21-year-old Bicknell, who is coming off a bronze medal-winning performance for Jamaica at the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador last week, is currently ranked 832nd in the world.
He defeated Alexander Cozbinov from Moldova, who is currently ranked 458th in the world, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the competition on Friday.
Bicknell told the Jamaica Observer from his base in Canada that he is very optimistic of victory for today’s matchup.
“I am very confident going into the final because I had two very good wins in the last couple of days, beating guys that are ranked higher than me,” said Bicknell. “Coming off the CAC Games bronze medal, I am very high on confidence and so I am looking forward to winning this final on Sunday,” he said.
Nevertheless, Bicknell pointed out that he is expecting a tough contest from his opponent who has been playing well in the tournament.
“He is a good player because I have known him for a while, so it should be a very exciting final, but in the end, I am confident that I will take home the victory,” he said.
“I am very fit and strong at the moment because I am in excellent shape, and so I am just going to go out there and do my best and to ensure that I get this victory,” Bicknell stated.
He underscored that this tournament is much tougher compared to the ones that he was previously playing in; therefore, he expects his rankings to increase at the end of the competition.
“This tournament is tougher than the ones that I have been playing because it is a level higher and so these results from a ranking point of view is the best in my career so far,” Bicknell said. “I am just going to continue to work hard and stay focused, and once I do that, then you will see great things from me,” he said.
