Hibbert wins US Scholar Athlete of the Year Award
TWO-TIME national men’s triple jump champion Jaydon Hibbert was on Thursday named the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Men’s Indoor and Outdoors Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, after his first year at the University of Arkansas.
Twenty-six Jamaicans — 13 men and 13 women — were named by the USTFCCCA after they exceeded the academic standards which included “minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, certifiable by either NCAA faculty rep or NCAA compliance coordinator or registrar’s office”, a release said on Thursday,
Additionally, for the indoor season athletes “must have finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event”, while for the outdoors the athletes “must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (the preliminary championship competition and/or the final championship competition) or for the multi-events, must have finished the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West for the most recent outdoor season”.
The Jamaican men who earned places on the Scholar Athlete list are Jeremy Farr, Jayden Hibbert, Ralford Mullings and Roje Stona of Arkansas; Dashinelle Dyer- Clemson and J’Vaughnn Blake (Dartmouth); JeVaughn Powell (Florida); Kevin Nedrick (Liberty); Terol Wilson (Nebraska); Shemar Chambers (North Carolina A&T); Zidane Brown (Ohio State); Malik Cunningham (Villanova); and Owayne Owens (Virginia).
The women’s list include Joanne Reid (Arkansas); Kiara Grant, Okerea Myrie and Danielle Sloley (Clemson); Kelly-Ann Beckford (Houston); Aliesha Shaw (Kent State); Terice Steen (New Mexico State); Shaquena Foote (San Diego State); Lamara Distin (Texas A&M); Adrienne Adams (University of Central Florida); Annia Ashley and Sanique Walker (University of South Florida); Roschell Clayton (Villanova); and Kayla Bonnick (Virginia).
