Triple jump champion Hibbert admits he’s still student of the game
THERE were a few adjustments to be made for Jaydon Hibbert as he retained his men’s triple jump title on Sunday’s final day of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) National Championship at a windy National Stadium.
The 18-year-old, however, prevailed to win with a mark of 17.68m (1.4m/s), while Jordan Scott was second with a wind-aided 16.73m (3.0m/s) and Ryan Brown third with a wind-aided 16.03m (2.5m/s).
Hibbert, the NCAA indoor and outdoor champion as well as the South-Eastern Conference (SEC) double winner, also had a wind-aided 17.65m jump (3.2m/s).
In addition to having to deal with winds in their backs of over 5.0 metres per second throwing them off their rhythm, Hibbert said he also had to adjust to new jumping spikes as well as the extended run-up of 14 steps.
“Oh, it was different today,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “Of all the competitions that I have had, the breeze was a factor and was not expected… the spikes that I wore is new and I had to adjust to that as well.”
Nevertheless with all that Hibbert, the world leader and a medal contender at the upcoming World Championships, said: “I’m proud, actually. I’m learning, and with the 14 steps it feels like I was back at KC [Kingston College] — it feels natural — and I just have to get used to it.”
The world leader at 17.87m said he was hoping for a personal best but had to settle for continuing his unbeaten streak that extends to last season.
“All that matters is that I learned some new things today and I will take this to my next competition and hopefully put them to good use,” he said.
