STETHS Class of ’83 gives a helping hand
ANXIOUS to make a difference for students struggling to make ends meet, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) graduating class of 1983 has presented grants worth $100,000 each to three students.
The students — in grades eight to 10 — are Nadine Whyte, Aliah Nesbeth and Jaydyn Miller. The presentations, which were made on June 30 following devotion at STETHS, formed part of three days of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the Class of 83’s graduation.
Mitzie Hatchett, coordinator of the anniversary and reunion celebrations, said the assistance programme will continue for at least another five years “through to 2028” in recognition of the difficulties being faced by students.
“…Because [some students] cannot afford the [costs], they are failing…” she said. “Some are not coming to school regularly, because they don’t have bus fare or lunch money… so they can’t concentrate on schoolwork.”
Hatchett said the grants may increase as needed going forward, to match inflation.
Under the arrangement, awardees will be closely monitored to ensure regular school attendance, appropriate behaviour and good work ethic.
The Class of 83’s anniversary celebrations (June 30-July 2) also included a picnic/fun day, church services and a banquet.
Established in 1961, STETHS celebrated its 60th anniversary in the 2021/22 academic year.
