St Jago’s Dunn wins discus for second gold medal at ‘Trials’
ST Jago High’s Shaiquan Dunn highlighted the third day of the JAAA/Puma National Junior Championship on Saturday by winning the boys’ Under-20 discus throw with 57.64m for his second gold in 24 hours.
Dunn had won the shot put on Friday with a throw of 18.06m, and was again in a class of his own as his 57.64 throw was two metres clear of second-place Ricardo Hayles of Clarendon College with 55.23m. Jamaica College’s Zachry Campbell was third with 51.86m.
Clarendon College’s Joseph Salmon took the Under-18 discus with 49.95m, ahead of the Kingston College pair of Daijon Budhai (49.49m) and Despiro Wray (47.22m). Fifteen-year-old prodigy Javontae Smith of Munroe College was fourth with 45.88m.
Kesean-Jordan Rhooms of Cornwall College was the only competitor in the boys’ Under-18 triple jump and leapt to a best of 14.23m. He has a personal best of 14.50m done in March.
Omaire Williamson of Holmwood Technical was quickest into the boys’ Under-18 400m final, clocking 48.98 in winning his heat ahead of Joshua Wint of Williams Knibbs in 48.99. Trevoy Smith of Herbert Morrison won heat two in 49.99.
Erique Webster of St Elizabeth Technical High was quickest in the final of the boys’ Under-20 400m with 48.25. KC’s Amal Glasgow clocked 47.82, but being from St Vincent and the Grenadines, he is not eligible for the final.
In the girls’ section, Dejanea Oakley, formerly of Clarendon College and now at the University of Texas, was fastest into the 400m final, clocking 53.51. Tonyan Beckford of Edwin Allen High with 54.94 was the next best.
The boys’ Under-17 200m final will be a cracker as three athletes looked good in winning their semis. Antonio Powell of Edwin Allen was quickest, winning heat one in 21.64, but KC’s Marcinho Rose was effortless in winning heat two in 21.99. Rickoy Hunter of St Elizabeth won heat three in 22.06.
In the boys’ Under-20 200m the improved-looking Javorne Dunkley of St Elizabeth Technical logged 21.19 and will take someone extraordinary to beat him in the final. Nickoy Drummond of Camperdown was second fastest with 21.56.
Ryheem Campbell of Excelsior High won the boys’ Under-20 pole vault, soaring to 3.40m. Courtney Williams of Happy Grove High was second with 3.00m.
