Mayne, Lopez top J’can performers at Caribbean Junior Golf Champs
THE 35th Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships ended on Friday at North Sound Golf Club in the Cayman Islands with 18 and under golfers Emily Mayne and Rocco Lopez posting the best results of the 12-member Jamaica team.
Mayne came second in her group and Lopez came third while having the distinction of being the only Jamaican to post an under par score, which he did in the third and final round.
Mayne scored two over par 73 on the final day, which was her best round of the three-round competition. Her overall score of 14 over par 227 came on the back of 78 in the first round and 76 in the second. She ended the tournament 15 shots behind group winner Holly McLean (212) of the Cayman Islands.
Jamaica’s other representative in the category was Mattea Issa who ended in sixth position after posting 28 over par 241. Issa’s scores were 82, 81 and an improved 78 in the final round.
Rocco Lopez and Aman Dhiman began the final round in joint third position but Lopez left the best for last when he sent down a one under par 70 to close the championship on three over par 216 in third place. His first- and second-round scores were one over par 72 and three over par 74, respectively.
Dhiman had a rough day, posting 10 over par 81 for a three-day total of 14 over par 227 which landed him in sixth place. His previous two-day scores were 72 and 74 in the first and second round, respectively.
Ryan Lue was three shots back from Dhiman on 230 (75, 76, 79) in eighth place.
The group winner was Kelvin Hernandez, who topped the leader board over all three days with under par rounds of 68 (-3), 70 (-1) and 65 (-6) for a total score of 10 under par 203.
Alessandra Coe, the youngest golfer on tour, gave Jamaica valuable points with her fifth-place finish in the 13 & under girls’ category. Her three-day total of 279 came on the back of 98, 88 and 93 in the three rounds, respectively. The group winner was Marena Fontanet (248) of Puerto Rico.
The 15 and under girls of Samantha Azan and Anoushka Katri also gave points to the overall team standing. Azan, with a combined score of 259 (82, 91, 86), ended the championship in sixth place while Katri occupied eighth place with her 267 (86, 87 94). Ava Saavedra (234) of Puerto Rico won the category.
The two 13 and under boys, Kemari Morris and Shasa Redlefsen, were sixth and eighth, respectively, in their group. Morris ended on 31 over par 244 (77, 85, 82), with his best round of 77 coming in the first round when he was in third place. Redlefsen dropped from seventh place in the second round to eight in the final round with a combined score of 42 over par 255 (88, 80, 87). Fernando Leduc (223) of Puerto Rico topped the group.
Aaron Ghosh and newcomer Davin Hogan closed the championship in 13th and 17th place, respectively. Ghosh’s scores were 252 (78, 89, 84) while Hogan’s scores were 83, 91, 91 for a total score of 265. Puerto Rico’s Evan Pena topped the group with an even par 213 (71, 70, 72).
